Is cannabidiol metabolized or excreted without being metabolized?
Cannabidiol is metabolized in liver microsomes by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 to an active metabolite 7-hydroxy-cannabidiol (7-OH- CBD). 7-OH-CBD is further metabolized by CYP3A4 to an inactive metabolite 7-carboxy-cannabidiol (7-COOH-CBD). Thus, drugs that induce CYP3A4, such as carbamazepine and phenytoin, could reduce serum CBD levels. CBD is also metabolized by glucuronidating enzymes UGT1A7, UGT1A9, and UGT2B7.
