The Medical Use of Marijuana Course offering consists of the following content: Understanding the endocannabinoid system, cannabis clinical uses and therapeutic indications, pharmacology, contraindications, side effects, adverse reactions, overdose prevention, drug interactions, dosing and routes of administration, risks and benefits, warnings and precautions, abuse and dependence, and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome.

Practitioners who have completed the course and who wish to register with NYSDOH to certify patients for medical marijuana must e-mail the course completion certificate (in PDF format) to NYSDOH at, along with the practitioner’s State License number and Health Commerce System (HCS) User ID. Once NYSDOH validates the information provided, it will send confirmation to the practitioner that he or she is registered with NYSDOH. Practitioners may not certify patients for medical marijuana until they receive confirmation from NYSDOH that they are registered to do so.
