This week:
Complications of preeclampsia

A 19-year-old healthy primigravida presents at 31-3/7 weeks' gestation with preeclampsia. She is admitted for further evaluation. While on labor & delivery, her renal output is noted to decrease substantially and you suspect that she has developed acute renal failure.

  1. What is the likely outcome of this pregnancy?
  2. Over the next few hours, the patient's platelet count is noted to decrease and her liver function tests rise. In addition to renal failure, it appears as if she is developing HELLP syndrome. How does this affect her prognosis?
